The road connecting the Local Daily Market to Dr Motsüo Memorial District Hospital (Civil Hospital) in Wokha, which has long been left in disrepair with deep potholes and uneven surfaces, has been temporarily repaired through the initiative of the Taxi Union operating along the route.
The Union’s voluntary effort has eased movement for patients, students, and the public who rely on the stretch daily.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the road, Taxi Union President Tumchobemo Kikon noted that it also serves the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), a college, and the District Sub-Jail. Despite this, he stated, the road has not received any financial support from the government.
According to Kikon, the union has been pooling its limited resources annually to maintain the road, even while struggling to earn their daily wages. He expressed disappointment that such an important route continues to be overlooked.
Meanwhile, sources from the contractor community informed that the Department of Urban Development, Nagaland had sanctioned repair works in June. However, persistent rainfall has delayed the commencement of the project, which is expected to begin once weather conditions improve.
