‘Teachers’ post recruitment cloud rises’

Dimapur, October 1 (MExN): Nagaland University teachers today echoed the grievances raised by some organizations in the state earlier about Nagaland University’s recruitment system. The Nagaland University Teachers’ Association (NUTA) today wrote to the Chief Rector of the university, Nikhil Kumar, seeking his intervention in a number of issues that indicated widespread anomalies in the recruitment system, especially for teachers’ posts.

The Nagaland University Teachers’ Association demanded immediate‘re-advertisement’ of all “teaching posts” but for which interviews have not been conducted, for the three Campuses of Lumami, Kohima and Medziphema, including the School of Engineering and Management. ‘Time has lapsed, the NUTA said, and the scheduled interviews for the teaching posts from October 6 October onwards cannot be held as they were in violation of the university’s ordinance.

The NUTA also demanded that all screening of applications for the teachers’ posts be held in the respective departments in accordance with the university’s Act and ordinance and not otherwise. “With regard to regional languages e.g. Department of Tenyidie, regional publications must be given due cognizance, at the time of screening of applications. The recent screening of applications for teaching posts for the School of Engineering and Management has been done in violation of the University Act/Ordinance,” the representation stated.

Further, immediate “re-advertisement” is demanded for all “teaching posts” of interviews conducted in October 2009, which could not be declared due to serious procedural lapses by the Vice Chancellor Prof. K Kannan.

“The NUTA demands the university authority strictly adhere to the Reservation Policy in these advertisements, taking into cognizance the repeated representation of the NUTA to the Vice Chancellor and other authorities, that teachers from scheduled tribes who have qualified and been selected under Open Category, cannot be placed under ST quota,” the NUTA said. This will facilitate immediate employment of ST eligible candidates into various academic departments of this university, the representation explained.

Also, ‘immediate interviews’ are demanded to be held for all eligible teachers under the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS). “It must be noted that the Vice Chancellor has deliberately victimized and denied due promotion under CAS by not conducting interviews for eligible teachers for the past many years,” NUTA said. All teachers who are eligible for promotion under Career Advancement Scheme before December 31 2008 are to be immediately called for interviews according to the “old UGC regulations” stipulated by notifications of the University Grants Commission.

“The university is suffering from lack of adequate teaching staff, neglect of the welfare of the teaching community and lack of attention on academic development by Prof. K Kannan. NUTA seek immediate appropriate action be taken and that the honorable Visitor be apprised of the serious irregularities being committed by the Vice Chancellor till date in this university,” the NUTA appealed to the Chief Rector.
