A minor Muslim girl was raped again on May 24 at Grace Colony, Dimapur by a Kuki boy of 18 years old by the name kachien. According to local papers, the rapist first attempted to rape the mother of the girl at knife point but failed. Then he ran away with the minor girl and raped her. To such rapist’s a stringent and severe punishment at minimum life imprisonment should be awarded irrespective of caste or creed. There should be no discrimination between local (Naga) and non-local (Non-Naga) because all the children were given by god. According to Delhi papers, in Delhi and surrounding areas such as Noida and Gurgaon, at least 4-5 rape cases are reported in a month. In Nagaland also, since few years back, rape cases are reported since the reaching of technology advancement in the state. During our fore fathers times, rape case is unknown in the Naga society and all the men folks took all the girls as their own sister and all the mothers as their own mother.
On rape cases and why it is increasing year by year, I would like to share my opinion for the readers of this paper. Firstly, it can be attributed to the introduction of video parlors. Most of the films or disc screenings in the video parlors are adult movies. The adult movies are produced for the married couples and adults, but 70-80% viewers are unmarried young people, particularly boys. The operators screen pornography and X-rated movies at late night.
I will tell you a true story, that in the first year of video parlor opening at Kohima, one of my neighbors went to the parlor taking his three years old daughter on his back. When the kissing scene appear, the little girl asked him, ‘Dad what are they doing?’ Her father was embarrassed and told her ‘they are biting eachother. Then the little girl asked again ‘why are they biting eachother?’ Then her father told her to keep silent. Now even the girls/boys of 3 and 4 years old know what is ‘kissing’ through English movies telecasting in TV. Mention may be made here that last year at Kohima, a Naga boy raped and murdered a married and dedicated non- Naga lady teacher. Not satisfied with his satanic act of raping and murdering the innocent lady, he inserted sticks into her private parts. It is a gruesome and heinous crime. According to the press reports, the rapist watched a pornographic movie in one of the video parlors the previous night.
So, it can easily be proved that the sexual instinct was aroused by watching such immoral movies.
Secondly, the 24 hrs Fashion TV shows telecasting through cable net work channels is one of the factors. In between the FTV, the operators telecast pornography show of girls. Late night shows and see through shows are not fashion shows but girls’ pornography i.e. half naked shows. They expose their breast wearing swimming cloths and night wear, and which cannot be called a fashion show and so also bra and briefs show. The models will appear with just covering one third portion of their breast etc. any concerned mother will agree that such shows are not fashion shows but girl pornography. It is said that even the complete nude body of both sexes are shown on the computer internet. The teenagers are watching such photograph through computers at late night. Recently, it was reported in the papers that two Muslims were arrested by the police on the charge of showing pornography photographs through mobile phones.
So, I would like to conclude that the above factors are the reasons why and how the rape incidents are increasing in Nagaland year by year.
Now I would, through this column, like to appeal to the women NGOs such as Women department of NBCC, NMA, AWO and other tribe’s Women Hoho and NSF to look into this fast growing social evil menace and check on time. If it is not checked on time, a time will come that your own daughter, sister or relatives may be raped. Recently I went to Jaipur and Shillong and stayed for three nights at each places. You know that Jaipur is the capital of a Hindu state Rajasthan and Shillong the capital of Maghalaya. I tried to find out whether fashion TV and Z-Trendz shows were telecasted by the cable network operators but I could not find it though they are telecasting more than 80 channels. So, I thought that the channels were banned by the government because the impacts of these channels are not good for the human society. To save our Nagas rich and clean culture, it will be good if our government bans the Fashion TV and Z-Trendz shows and in cooperation with women activists, periodically make surprise checking of the video parlours.
