In a vibrant celebration of cinema from around the world, the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) has proved to be a ‘unique experience’ for both filmmakers and aspiring filmmakers from Nagaland. A 10-member team from the state, namely, Vileno Tase, Athe Rhi, Nungshitemjen Jamir, Vikepe Yhokha, Lonehol Kin, Ravinder Chetri, I Baso Chang, Arienba Jamir, Jepito H Zhimomi and Tiakumzuk Pongener are currently participating in the 9-day film festival at Panaji in Goa from November 20-28.

The theme of this year’s edition- ‘Young Filmmakers – The Future is Now’ has also resonated well with the young filmmakers from Nagaland, who were nominated to be part of the IFFI by the state Department of Information & Public Relations.

In an exclusive interview with The Morung Express, Journalist & Filmmaker, Athe Rhi related that, “This festival has been a unique experience for me.” What stood out the most for her is been given “the opportunity to meet accomplished individuals, veteran filmmakers, actors/artists while engaging in master classes, panel discussions, and insightful conversations.”

The festival, she also underscored, “gives importance to young filmmakers by inviting student delegates from various states of the country.” This, she emphasised, “would be very beneficial for young filmmakers of tomorrow.”

“The festival also highlights some other exciting extravaganzas such as music events, fashion show, showcasing diverse narratives apart from film screenings,” she further divulged.

“It’s good to be in an environment which is created around films,” Arienba Jamir, Illustrator & Filmmaker put across even while terming the experience as “good” and “inspiring.”

Stating that, “you meet people who have similar interests and stories to tell, people who are on similar journeys,” he also affirmed that, “it pushes the community forward and certainly helps in one’s journey as well.”

“To have a close interaction with veterans, professionals, and upcoming talents, for this many days, in an environment created around films, is rare and makes quite the impact”, he further put across.

Jepito H Zhimomi, a Film Student, said, “I really feel very good and privileged attending IFFI, Goa.” He is currently studying Film & Video Editing at Dr Bhupen Hazarika Regional Government Film & Television Institute, Sila, Changsari in Assam

For him, one of the perks of attending such an event is connecting with people who are really interested in making films even while expressing his keen interest in telling stories surrounding Naga culture through films in the near future.

He was particularly inspired by the seriousness and the sacrifices filmmakers have made to eventually see their works being screened at the prestigious film festival. Towards this end, he also exuded hope that few years down the line, there will be many more filmmakers from Nagaland.

‘Headhunting to Beatboxing’
Mention may be made here that the musical documentary, “Headhunting to Beatboxing”, directed by Rohit Gupta and produced by AR Rahman was one of the films featured at the IFFI 2024 Gala Premieres on November 27.

The film explores the musical heritage of Nagaland encompassing different genres of folk music, folk fusion, classical, contemporary, hip hop, etc. It also highlights how despite its violent history, music has channelised the energy of Naga youths towards creative endeavours.
