The Church vis-à-vis the Government

It is quite natural that there be a storm of sharp ideological tension when we happen to set something new in addition or modification to the prevailing system.

My attention is drawn to make clarification and justification in response to the news item in Nagaland Post on 21st May 2007 under the caption “Freedom of religion” leveled against the publication of an article entitled “Creation of Government Theological College in the state” in some local dailies on 18th May 2007.

In fact, differences of opinions in such manner is quite obvious however I would like to make my stand clear that I did not write my view against any individual image nor images of any organization, rather I wrote it with the following motives.

Firstly, I put it that a govt. theological college be set up in the state since Nagaland is predominantly a Christian state.

Secondly, creation of theological post in the educational institutions by introducing scriptural subjects in the syllabus of school, colleges and universities.

So here my writing is simple and is soliciting the govt. and the concerned department with the desire of how nice it would be if such facilities are created in our beautiful Nagaland.

Of course, analyzing the role of the church and the govt. it is quite understandable that each one has got a distinctive role to play as per the plan of God; since both are ordained by God to discharge their duties sincerely and faithfully for the wellbeing of its citizens spiritually and materially. In this context, to my observation, the church and the govt. are two indispensable entities for which none of them could survive without the other. So, we cannot say that one is holy and other is unholy. I believe that what God has ordained man should not ridicule. In this situation, I should say that there should be a close work of co-ordination between the two to bring about a desired change in life. The Bible is also crystal clear that we as a priest of God should have the privilege to rebuke, correct and appreciate besides being given to instruction and preaching.

In the same token, it is the bounden duty of the govt. to gear up their resources to provide all essential facilities for the welfare of its citizens. In this connection, a Christian govt. has the liberty to take up all kinds of noble ventures for the people to bring forth peace and prosperity in its fullest measures.

Therefore, we should not assume govt. taking up noble ventures like creation of theological college in the state and introducing scriptural subject in the educational institution as though it is violating the law of God. Of course, we must play our role of impartial and fair justification at the outcome of any Govt. legislation.

Hence, I take this privilege to express my sense of appreciation to all the successive govt. in Nagaland for providing all the facilities and complexes in our state.

Lastly, I request all the Naga brothers to express their view if you have better ideas in this subject matter.
