Dimapur, January 15 (MExN): The Tangshung Naga Students’ Union (TNSU), Nagaland, has strongly condemned the recent armed clashes between NSCN-K/YA and NSCN-K/AM in the Pangsaung and Nanyun areas of the Naga Self-Administered Zone, stating that the violence has claimed casualties among “Naga brothers” and further deepened the suffering of Nagas in Myanmar.
In a statement, the union referred to the January 9 clash at Khammatine village and the retaliatory encounter on January 12 between Taka and Nampha, expressing grave concern over the continuing hostilities.
TNSU said that the Nagas in Myanmar have already been enduring immense hardship since the military junta seized power, marked by prolonged conflict, fear, economic distress and forced conscription, which have inflicted severe mental trauma, particularly on Naga youths in the eastern region.
“At this critical juncture, internal fighting among Naga brothers only aggravates the plight of our people,” the union said.
The students’ body said it was especially alarmed as students are preparing for promotion and final examinations, describing the period as the most crucial phase of their academic journey. It said ongoing violence, displacement and insecurity disrupt education, undermine concentration and jeopardise the future of Naga students who seek learning, dignity and peace amid Myanmar’s political turmoil.
The union asserted that fratricidal violence serves no constructive purpose and erodes Naga unity, adding that such acts neither advance the Naga cause nor protect the people, but instead traumatise youths and place innocent civilians at risk.
Appealing for restraint, TNSU urged the leaderships of both NSCN-K/YA and NSCN-K/AM to immediately cease infighting and resolve their differences through dialogue and peaceful means.
The union also called upon Naga elders, church leaders, civil society organisations and all stakeholders to intervene urgently to help restore peace and unity in the region.
Reaffirming its stand, TNSU said it stands resolutely with Naga students, peace and future generations, asserting that the aspirations of Naga youths must not be sacrificed to internal conflict.
