1937 - Non-aggression treaty signed between Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq and Turkey.

1943 - Jean Moulin, hero of the French resistance, died. Known as "Max", he coordinated resistance in occupied France but was captured and tortured by the Gestapo and died of his injuries.

1967 - Vivien Leigh, British actress of stage and screen, died; best known for her role in the film "Gone with the Wind".

1976 - Former U.S. president Richard Nixon was disbarred by a New York court after his obstruction of justice during the Watergate affair.

1993 - World's first floating swimming pool built in 18th century sinks in river Seine.

2002 - African leaders buried the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) at a 2-day summit in Durban in preparation for the launch of the more ambitious African Union the following day.

2003 - First giant panda to be returned to the wild after being raised by humans.

2005 - Group of Eight (G8) leaders meeting in Gleneagles, Scotland, agreed to more than double aid for Africa to $50 billion.

2007 - Former Indian Prime Minister and socialist politician Chandra Shekhar died aged 80.
