Training on grape cultivation held at SAS NU Medziphema

Medziphema, April 1(MExN): A two-day training programme on grape cultivation was conducted jointly by ICAR–AICRP on Fruits (Medziphema) and ICAR–NRC Grapes, Pune, at the Department of Horticulture, School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University, Medziphema.

The programme, held on March 26 and 27, was led by senior scientist Dr Nishant Deshmukh and Centre in-charge Prof C S Maiti. It provided farmers with technical expertise on vineyard establishment, pruning and canopy management, tailored to the agro-climatic conditions of the Northeast.

Practical field demonstrations were also conducted in Niuland district as part of the training.

Organised under the Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP), the programme included distribution of essential inputs for grape cultivation, along with structural materials for constructing permanent trellis systems to encourage adoption of improved practices and support livelihood enhancement.

The initiative aimed at promoting agricultural diversification in Nagaland, with organisers highlighting the potential for grape cultivation in non-traditional areas and expressing optimism for sustainable horticultural growth.

A total of 35 progressive farmers, 15 students and research scholars, along with other stakeholders, participated in the programme.

The event concluded with an interactive session where participants shared their queries and experiences, indicating strong interest in grape cultivation as a viable avenue for diversification.

The programme was facilitated by Ujjwal Singh, SRF, ICAR–AICRP on Fruits.
