Kohima, August 7 (MExN): The Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM), RD conducted tree plantation campaign cum sanitation drive in convergence with the Forest Department under Nagaland Forest Management Project from July 2 which culminated on  August 7 in 200 pilot villages under 74 RD Blocks across 11 districts in the State.
The sanitation and tree plantation drives were conducted in solidarity with the State government in celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Indian Independence, ‘Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav’ from July 1 to August 14.

The drives were carried out through the Self-Help Groups (SHGs) with participation from PD-DRDA, DFO, Forest Range Officers, Village Councils, youths, and churches. 7000 trees and ornamental plants were planted in the vicinity of DRDA and Block offices, village gates and streets, church compounds, local ground and community hall area.

One of the factors affecting global warming and climate change is the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the NSRLM stated in its press release on Saturday.

The campaign is all about engaging communities to focus their efforts on pressing environmental concerns and contribute in creating microclimate in rural habitations and reduce greenhouse gases by offsetting carbon emission towards facilitating healthier soil and natural humidity control, prevent flooding and soil erosion, repairing damaged ecosystems and mitigating climate changes, it added.

With its presence in 1245 villages, this will be an annual effort by the SHGs in convergence with the Forest department to foster tree plantation in all the villages towards a greener environment, the NSRLM added.
