Peren, May 1 (DIPR): Earth day falls on April 22nd and is celebrated all around the world by more than 500 million people in 175 countries. It has become a cause uniting people around the world as numerous communities celebrate ‘Earth Week’ – an entire week of activities focus on environment issues.
Thus, to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, for the first time in the history of the Distric, a massive tree plantation programme was organized by Peren District Planning and Development Board on April 30, 2011 at the New District H.Q. site, where T.R. Zeliang, Minister Planning & Co-ordination, Vety. & A.H., Evaluation and Chairman D.P.D.B was the Chief Patron. The Plantation Programme was launched with the Signature Campaign organized by Society for Protection of Ecology & Environment, where the Minister put his initial and commented – ‘Let Us Regenerate Nature’ followed by all HoD in Peren District. The Programme was chaired by Khrienuo C. Metha, Deputy Commissioner & Chairperson, S.P.E.E. Peren District and Samuel Chankija IFS , DFO Peren as the main Moderator of the Programme.
In the programme, more than one thousand participants took part consisting of all the departments in the District, The Zeliangrong Gazetted Officer Association, Apex N.G.O.’s, Students and Village Volunteers who actively participated in and around the acquired New District H.Q. The Chief Patron provided breakfast and lunch for all the participants and more than 12000 tree saplings were sponsored by Peren Forest Division.
