Dimapur, April 11 (MExN): Transporters and truckers are now in even more trouble for something they always have to endure but cannot defy – “taxes” imposed by the undergrounds. Now paying something they cannot dare refuse has landed them in trouble with the security forces. It is informed that six truckers were arrested and detained by troops of the Assam Rifles in Dimapur recently for paying the so-called “taxes” to the many Naga underground groups.
The Dimapur District Truck Drivers’ Union informed today that the 29th Assam Rifles raided the union’s office on April 10. The security forces arrested six members of the union and detained them for the reason that the truckers have had to pay “taxes” to the various undergrounds groups.
“If this is the criteria for search and arrest, the entire populace of the state will be subjected to search and arrest,” the union reminded in a press release issued to the Media today. The union referred to the various ‘taxation’ imposed by the various underground groups. The “coupons” are “deposited” by the groups in the office of the union, the press release said.
The union also expressed resentment that instead of helping in resolving the issues faced by the transporters and truckers, the Assam rifles had to detain the union’s members. The union has appealed to the authorities to ascertain facts before executing search-and-arrest of innocent public so that the people will not lose confidence in the law enforcers.
