The 3rd edition of Topong Nyakba Memorial Soccer Trophy organized by Sangsangnyu Students’ Union kicked off at Sangsangnyu village in Tuensang on December 4.
In the opening ceremony, Mongko Yanchu Chang, Commandant VG Tuensang graced the occasion as the special guest.
The event was attended by elders and leaders of nearby villages, CCSU and other delegates of the district.
Special guest in his speech said, “Football is a game where it teaches discipline and therefore, I would like to remind the youngsters that a disciplined player can go a long way in his career. I would also like to mention that, it is a game of young people, older people may want to play but our body will not have the same energy. We need unity among ourselves to achieve success in anything that we do. Through this trophy I would like to encourage all of us to be united, let us go ahead in our society. May this tournament discipline us to achieve in life, after 30 or 40 years later, our body will get old and tired then what will we do. Nagaland is still lacking behind in sports infrastructure and its avenues. Most of the players also play only during this season and spend the rest of the months in other works. Whatever you do in your life, be consistent.”
Short speeches were also delivered by Moshayimjong, President, Sangangnyu Students’ Union, C Somba, VDB Secretary and B. Sayu DB.
Earlier, the programme was led by S. Mongko Chollen and invocation was spoken by M. Sipong.
A special song was also performed by E. Ben which was followed by kick off of the tornament by the special guest.
In the first match defending champions, Changsang FC defeated Keiyang FC by a score of 4-1. Mongko scored a hattrick while Khumba scored a goal. B. Moa scored the only goal for Keiyang.
The champion will walk away with a cash prize of Rs. 25,000 along with trophy, certificates and medals. The runners-up will receive a cash prize of Rs. 15,000. Each of the semi-finalist team will receive Rs. 2500 each. Golden Ball, Golden Boot and Golden Glove winners will be awarded with a cash prize of Rs. 1000 each. Altogether, 13 teams are vying for the trophy which will conclude on December 11.
