Tuensang marks International Women’s Day marked with sports events

International Women’s Day (IWD) was celebrated at the Parade Ground in Tuensang on March 7 with students, women’s organisations and officials coming together to highlight the role and empowerment of women in society.

The event, which featured sports competitions and community participation, was organised by Mission Shakti–District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW) under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative in collaboration with MY Bharat, Tuensang and the Department of Social Welfare.

More than 160 students from 16 educational institutions participated in the celebration. Mother volunteers representing various frontal tribal women’s organisations of Tuensang also joined the event.

During the programme, Songmao from DHEW highlighted the services available through the women’s helpline and encouraged women to make use of the support systems available whenever needed. 

She also pointed out that Tuensang district is currently led by a woman Deputy Commissioner, which she said serves as an inspiration for young girls and women.

Extra Assistant Commissioner Dr Zujanbeni N Ngullie encouraged the participants and highlighted the growing presence and contribution of women across different sectors. She also stressed the importance of empowering women and recognising their expanding role in various spheres of society.

 

Short speeches were delivered by District Welfare Officer and District Nodal Officer for Mission Shakti, Longlang Luckpan; District Mission Coordinator, DHEW Mission Shakti, Songmao; and Songmao Mand Seili of MY Bharat Tuensang.

Saotola Chang, Gender Specialist, DHEW, chaired the programme, while the opening prayer was offered by M Bahla, Vice President of YBBT.

As part of the celebration, sports competitions were organised in different race categories.

In the 100-metre race, Yongching Khumla of Holy Angel School secured first place, followed by Koklila of 3rd NAP High School in second place and Tonching of Baptist Thangyen Higher Secondary School in third place.

In the 200-metre race, Soshila of 3rd NAP High School finished first, Anti Kundang Chang of 3rd NAP High School secured second place, while Thungpang Naro of Holy Angel School came third.

In the 400-metre race, Sentinaro, an individual participant, secured first position. Songmo T of Sao Chang Government College finished second while Sujang of the same college placed third.

The winners were awarded certificates and cash prizes during the prize distribution ceremony.

Mother volunteers representing women’s organisations also participated in recreational games organised as part of the event.
