UGC updates on fake universities

New Delhi, August 30 (MExN): The University Grants Commission (UGC), on August 25, has issued a public notification updating students and public at large about the 21 fake universities in India. ‘The 21 self-styled, unrecognised institutions which are functioning in contravention of the UGC Act, have been declared as fake universities and these are not empowered to confer any degree, stated the UGC notification. 

Under Section 22 of the UGC Act 1956, the Commission informed that right of conferring or granting degrees shall be exercised only by a University established or incorporated by or under a Central Act, a Provincial Act or a State Act or an institution deemed to be a University under Section 3 or an institution specially empowered by an Act of Parliament to confer or grant degrees. Further, Section 23 prohibits the use of the word 'University' by any institution other than a university established as stated above, it added. 

As per list provided by the UGC, Delhi has most number of fake universities at 8 , followed by 4 in Uttar Pradesh and 2 each in Odisha and West Bengal, (See list)
