Dimapur, December 18 (MExN): Unity College Dimapur celebrated its annual cultural programme on December 14.
The hosts Shunbana Rahman and Zuben Ngullie led the congregation with ease and a flow that kept the programme moving.
Ekonthung Jami, Assistant Professor, Department of English exhorted on the distinct culture of the Nagas and its importance in saving the identity of the entire community as a whole “by relearning what our ancestors have given us,” said a press release from the College.
Dr Temjenwabang, Convenor of Research Committee announced the completion of two academic works by Unity College – special edition of the College’s peer reviewed ‘Journal of Humanities and Social Science’ and the ‘Proceedings’ of a National Seminar.
They were released by NM Ovung, Chairman of Unity College and Dr. Lichumo Enie, Principal of Unity College. The students presented a Lotha folk song titled ‘Potsow Ekhungyan’ meaning ‘God’s kingdom’ followed by Bengali victory dance symbolizing victory over evil, and ’Jen mong Hoi Chem,’ a Phom Folk song that sings about a call to the younger generation who yearn for quality education to be united and blessed.
The folk dances ‘Ahuna’ (season of plenty) of the Sumis and the Hornbill dance of the Ao’s were also presented.
The cultural event concluded with a Nepali Folk Dance. The event also hosted Indigenous games.
Sports like War Cry, Cock Fight, Fire Making, Greased Pole Climbing, Bamboo Stilt Race and Cart Racing were included in the competition.
The evening season was marked by the Unity Voice Hunt, an annual singing competition celebrated by the college to find the best voice among the students.
This judges included Moanungsang, first Naga Idol winner and Maheukosing Eliem, bassist of Papersky and a music teacher at Musika. A total of ten participants took part in the event after a screening.
Moanungsang, Asuvi Kiho (Assistant Professor), Marshiba and Jentysangla also performed at the event.
Gabriel Pucho of BA 2nd Semester was declared the winner of Unity Voice Hunt 2019 followed by runners up Zareni C Kithan of BA 4th Semester.
The daylong event came to an end with DJ Aloza dub stepping her beats for the entire college.
