‘Unusual mortality’ of pigs in Mon, Kiphire & Phek

DIMAPUR, APRIL 5 (MExN): The Nagaland Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services today informed that there has been “unusual mortality” of the pig population in Mon, Kiphire and Phek districts recently.

Following this, the department asked the public and piggery farmers to remain vigilant and issued a set of advisories.

The advisory directed the public and piggery farmers to report death of pigs to the nearest Veterinary Health Centre for necessary sere-monitoring. It also asked all not to consume dead/diseased pigs, but carry out deep burial method and subsequent sanitization.

It also advised people to refrain from importing live pigs for meat and piglets for breeding purpose from outside without knowing the health status. The department urged all to maintain strict bio-security measures in the farms and practice usage of footbath at the entrance of the farm.

It meanwhile urged piggery farmers to vaccinate their pigs against Classical Swine Fever and avoid feeding them with feeds especially from hotels and other wastes which may be contaminated.
