USSC to protest power breakdown

Dimapur, October 11 (MExN): An ultimatum is served to the chief engineer of Power by a students’ organization, the United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC), to replace a main transformer in Kiphire town  before  October 22. The USSC cautioned in a letter addressed to the chief engineer today that  failing to take necessary action will invite the organization to “take its own course of action for which the concern department will held full responsible.”

The USSC explained that “the population of Kiphire town has been immensely increasing since the declaration of district headquarter in the year 2004” but “Power supply is very poor in the entire district.”

Kiphire district has been completely “under darkness” since  September 7 and functioning of government offices have been hampered, as with  entrepreneurial activity being affected. The students’ community is the more affected lot as their selection/final examination is “at peak”. Several NGOs and concerned citizens have been voicing the matter to the department but all appeals have “turn deaf ears,” the USSC explained.

“The 500 KV which was issued earlier was damaged  since 7th September 2010 as the consumer is high and could not give enough power supply in the town and therefore it  must  be  replaced  with  700 KV transformer within 10  days i.e. before 22nd Oct 2010. Failing to comply with our demand will compel the conference to take phase wise agitation; picketing of Power office after the expiry of deadline w.e.f 26th Oct 2010; locking of Power office w.e.f 28th Oct. 2010,” the letter warned.
