DIMAPUR, AUGUST 28 (MExN): Veteran Naga politician and Advisor for Social Welfare, Noke Wangnao passed away at the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR), Chümoukedima in the morning of August 28.
At 87 years old, Noke Wangnao stood as the oldest serving member of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, leaving behind a legacy that spanned decades. His distinguished political journey commenced in 1974 when he first entered the realm of Nagaland politics by representing the 43-Tapi Assembly Constituency under Mon District.
Over the years, Wangnao’s influence and dedication became evident through his consistent re-election. With a political career spanning six decades, he was elected nine times and served in various capacities, including Minister, Advisor, and MLA. Throughout his tenure, he not only represented his constituents but also took on various crucial roles within the Nagaland Government.
In a State Funeral held at Kuda Village, Nagarjan, Dimapur, the Government of Nagaland, led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton, paid their final tribute to late Noke Wangnao.
Chief Minister Rio recalled Wangnao as a man of unwavering principles and a staunch advocate for regionalism. Rio emphasized his deep connection with grassroots communities and his reputation for speaking candidly from the heart.
The Chief Minister also acknowledged Wangnao’s pivotal role in the formation of the NDPP political party. He expressed his sorrow, stating that Wangnao’s passing is not only a loss to his family and the Konyak community, but to all Nagas.
Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton praised late Wangnao as a paragon of honesty and integrity, remarking that his absence leaves an irreplaceable void. Sharingain Longkumer, Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, referred to Noke as a fatherly figure, respected and admired by many for his humility and simplicity.
The ceremony included short speeches from notable figures, including P Longon, MLA; Chingwang Konyak, Director of Social Welfare; President of ENPO; the Konyak Union Dimapur, and the Konyak Baptist Church Dimapur. Late Wangnao’s wife and brother-in-law also delivered brief remarks on behalf of the grieving family.
The funeral, which took place at Noke’s residence in Kuda Village Nagarjan, drew mourners from all walks of life who came to pay their respects. Late Wangnao’s remains are expected to reach his village the day after, informed a report from the DIPR.
The State Funeral proceedings were overseen by Martha R Ritse, IAS, Secretary of the Social Welfare Department. The ceremony concluded with a benediction by TW Yamyap Konyak, State Chaplain, followed by a Guard of Honour.
Meanwhile, condolences poured in throughout the day, highlighting the impact Wangnao had on his community and beyond.
Governor La Ganesan expressed his deep sorrow at the passing of late Noke Wangnao, extolling him as a political stalwart committed to the upliftment of the people. The Governor conveyed condolences to the bereaved family, imploring divine strength to endure the profound loss.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio had earlier shared poignant memories of his friend and political compatriot, affectionately known as “Baba Noke.” Describing their shared journey as a testament to Wangnao’s steadfast character and unwavering principles, Rio underscored Wangnao’s role as a pillar of strength and an inspiration to all. The Chief Minister highlighted the unparalleled loyalty and dedication Wangnao exhibited, spanning decades of service to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly.
Deputy Chief Minister, TR Zeliang also expressed grief and said: “A man of few words and filled with virtue of humility, his demise is a huge loss for the people of the State.”
