Villages demand scrapping of Dikhu hydro work

Dimapur, July 2 (MExN): A number of villages in Longleng district today decried construction works for the proposed Dikhu Hydro project in Tamlu and said the works should be stopped to avert damage to farmlands and roads in the area.

A joint letter issued by the local village authorities of B Namsang, Yongnyah, Tamlu, Tangha, Kangching and Nian village had addressed the Commissioner and Secretary for Power. The village elders and public leaders of the hydro-project ‘affected’ villages in Longleng district are said to have met on June 26 in Tamlu. A number of decisions were taking which included demanding that the project works should be stopped.

“The members observed that a large area (90 %) of our agricultural land is likely to be submerged which will render the poor villager jobless; the only road which is under construction linking the district headquarter is going to be submerged along with the main bridge over the Dikhu river,” the letter explained to the Power authorities. Stating these reasons, the villages have requested that the authority in concern stop the works for the proposed hydro-project without delay.
