Urges perpetrators to confess

Kohima, January 31 (MExN): The Viswema Village Council (VVC) has expressed “deep concern and anguish” over a major wildfire, allegedly set “deliberately” on January 26, which caused massive destruction to the village lands of Khiyoke and Mt Tempü.

In a statement issued by the VVC Chairman Tebül Neikha, and Secretary Dühovil Rhetso, the Council claimed these areas as the “exclusive property” and natural heritage of Viswema Village, crucial to the ecological balance, livelihood, and heritage of the Viswemi people.

It noted that Khiyoke, in particular, serves as an important route to the famous Dzükou Valley, and along with Mt Tempü, receives numerous visitors and trekkers from different places.

The Council stated that the “reckless act” has caused significant environmental damage, undermined the responsibility entrusted to the village as the “sole custodian of these lands,” and also poses a serious threat to public safety, tourism and the sustainable preservation of these vital natural resources.

In this regard, it urged the person(s) responsible to voluntarily come forward and confess before being identified. “Failure to do so will leave the Council with no alternative but to initiate strict action,” the Council warned, adding that once caught, the offender(s) would face the full course of action under village customary laws and relevant regulations “without leniency.”

The Council further appealed to all residents, visitors, and stakeholders to remain vigilant and cooperate in safeguarding the lands and natural resources.

Emphasizing that preservation is a “shared responsibility,” it called for collective awareness and responsible behaviour to prevent future incidents.

The Council reiterated its commitment to protect the environment, uphold village laws, and ensure the safety, well-being, and sustainable future of both the Viswema community and all who enjoy these treasured natural sites.
