The Working Committee, Naga National Political Groups (WC, NNPGs) issued a press statement on August 1, expressing concern on a number of critical issues affecting Nagaland.

The issues it raised were related to oil and natural resources, the anticipated but delayed solution to the Indo-Naga political problem and the violence in neighbouring Manipur.

With regard to petroleum resources, it said that despite the Indian Constitution guaranteeing to the Nagas the right to explore and extract natural resources in Nagaland, the Union Petroleum Ministry has continued to infringe on the Constitutional rights of the Nagas. It said that overcoming this “operational vacuum” became a major feature of the political discussion between the GoI and WC, which resulted in the two entities agreeing to the prospect of forming tribal bodies with powers to legislate on lands and its natural resources. Despite, it held that “vultures” are still eyeing the underground wealth of Naga people.”

It maintained that there is a clear roadmap for the anticipated Indo-Naga political solution based on the Agreed Position contrary to claims. While stating that the narrative rejecting Nagaland state and Article 371 (A) “is an insult" to the intellect of the people of Nagaland, it held that Article 371 (A) is the only instrument which sustains the political identity and distinct historical foundation of the Naga people and must be fortified.

The WC further expressed concern on what it alleged was arms and ammunition of the Nagaland Police fueling the violence in Manipur. It said, “It is ironic that Nagaland Police arms and ammo, meant to defend Nagaland, are being bought off to defend the territorial integrity of Manipur by those claiming to stand for Nagalim for Christ!”

It then called for proactive response from the Nagaland state government in addressing the ongoing turmoil in Manipur, while urging the Chief Minister to assert leadership and join secular voices to restore peace and harmony in the region.
