WC, NNPGs reject oil exploration MoU

Dimapur, June 19 (MExN): The Working Committee of Naga National Political Groups (WC, NNPGs) on Friday rejected the Memorandum of Understanding on oil exploration signed on June 11, 2026, by the Chief Ministers of Nagaland and Assam along with the Union Petroleum Ministry, calling it an attempt to “hijack and undermine” the economy of Nagaland.

“The Naga political negotiators have not entrusted any entity or party to sign MoUs regarding exploration, extraction and transportation of crude oil and other natural resources from the ancestral Naga homeland,” the WC, NNPGs (The Conglomeration of 11 NNPGs) said in a statement issued through its Media Cell.

“Only an acceptable and honourable political solution will enable the first barrel of oil to be extracted,” it stated. The conglomeration of 11 NNPGs cautioned that any “MoUs, Joint ventures, profit sharing by business entities in the name of governments will be confronted” until an honorable and acceptable political solution is reached.

The statement further alleged that NPF leadership, ahead of a June 2017 meeting convened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Naga village headmen of the Nagaland Gaon Bura Federation (NGBF), summoned the headmen and “rebuked and advised them” against travelling to New Delhi.

It also held NPF leadership, erstwhile NDPP responsible for the exit of former GoI interlocutor RN Ravi, who stepped down on September 22, 2021, after NPF campaigned for his removal. “The NPF leadership claimed RN Ravi's removal was the first achievement of the new PDA government. It was, in reality, an act of sabotage,” the statement said.

The conglomeration further criticised NPF’s demand for a political figure to lead the talks, arguing that current and former GoI interlocutors and representatives, “retired IPS officers and bureaucrats” carried full trust and endorsement of the central government's political leadership.

The WC, NNPGs also slammed NPF legislators for mocking the “Fed Up Nagas” youth movement, calling such remarks “insensitive” and a betrayal of public trust.
