Weather based Integrated Agro Advisory for the month of August 2021

South west monsoon (from June till date) rainfall over Nagaland as per India Meteorological Department is normal for Mon, Mokokchung, Kiphire and Peren but is deficient for the remaining district. 

Agronomy –LK Baishya

1.    Sowing of sesamum, black gram etc can be carried out under upland condition.

2.    Intercultural operation for paddy and time for 2nd split dose of nitrogen 5kg/bigha application.

3.    Harvesting of rain water should be started for its multiple uses especially during lean period (Oct-Jan/Feb).

4.    Time for application of nitrogen fertilizers to maize if it is in silking stage @ 5-7 kg/bigha.

Plant Breeding & Genetics –Harendra Verma

1.    In lowland paddy field, farmers can grow upland rice variety such as Bhalum-3 variety.

2.    Farmers are advised to go for staggered planting of rice, Gitesh a HYV of rice is suitable for staggered planting.

3.    Farmers are advised to cultivate soybean, sesame, black gram and green gram as alternate crops in upland areas.

4.    Farmer should not use over dose of nitrogenous fertilizers such as urea, they have to add more organic matter via manure and well decomposed compost and vermicompost in soil to enhance water holding capacity of soil, to minimize the effect of moisture stress. 

5.    Farmer can go for cultivation of aerobic rice.

Soil Science – Christy BK Sangma

1.    During the rainy season, soil should not be kept barren as it will leach out soil as well as nutrients. So covering the crop area with proper crop residue or mulching is a must.

2.    Fertilizers should be applied in split doses whenever applied during monsoon and avoid its application during rainy days as the losses will be more because of rain. 

Poultry – Mahak and Talimoa

1.    Provide proper ventilation.

2.    Floor should be dry and litter build up should not be allowed.

3.    Clean and disinfect feeders and waterers regularly. 

4.    Isolate and treat sick birds.

5.    Birds should be properly vaccinated on schedule.

6.    Avoid overcrowding and mixing up of birds of different age groups.

7.    Broiler birds must be allowed access to feed and water at all times till 42 days of age.

8.    Laying birds should be given atleast 16 hours of bright light daily.

9.    Mineral requirements of laying birds need to be provided to prevent behavioural and production problems.

Piggery – Mahak and Talimoa

1.    As it is peak hot season, measures to relieve heat stress have to be taken.

2.    Protect from direct sun and rain.

3.    Provide electrolytes in drinking water on hot days.

4.    Maintain deworming and vaccination on schedule.

5.    Prevent water logging on the sty floor.

6.    Disinfect the floor regularly.

7.    Feeding and drinking trough should be cleaned properly before feeding.

8.    If some animals get sick, they should be attended after all the healthy animals are cleaned, fed and attended.

9.    If animals start dying en masse, report to the District Veterinary Officer.

Fishery- Jyotish Barman

1.    In ponds which have not been stocked with fingerlings should be stocked by first half of the month.

2.    Strengthen the pond embankment to prevent overflow of water due to heavy rainfall for those district which are receiving good amount of rainfall.

3.    Feeding with mixture of mustard oil cake and rice bran/rice polish @ 7-10 kg/day/ha.

4.    Constantly monitor fish activities and movement every morning to observe any abnormal behaviour.

5.    Put some floating aquatic plant in one corner of the pond to provide shelter for the stocked fish, during heavy sunny days.
