Plant Breeding & Genetics –Harendra Verma
1. Variety suitable for our region -
Maize - RCM-76 a composite variety
Sesame – Amrit and Prachi
2. Arrange quality seeds of variety suitable for our region for crops viz rice, maize, sesame, soyabean etc from authentic source. Also arrange fertilizers and manure in adequate quantity.
3. Seed treatment should be carried out with Vitavax (carboxin + thiram) 2-3 g/kg seed.
4. Transplant seedlings at the age of 20-25 days and transplant only healthy seedlings.
5. To avoid attack of termites, dip the seedlings in a solution of Chlorpyrifos 50EC, Cypermetrin 5EC, having concentration of 0.4% (4ml/liter of water) for 10 minutes before transplanting.
6. Treat the roots of seedling with bavistin fungicide solution having concentration of 0.4% to avoid occurrence of bakanae disease and other fungal diseases.
7. Do transplanting and sowing of various crops in line by maintaining an isolation distance of 30*10 cm for rice and sesame; 60*20 cm in maize for proper air circulation and to avoid disease incidence. It will also provide opportunity for easy intercultural operation such as weeding, earthing-up etc.

For ponds where fingerlings have been stocked
Feeding daily to be continued @ 3% of total weight of the fish stocked.
Application of Agricultural lime @ 27 kg/ha to be done in both stocked and un-stocked ponds. Lime should be applied only on sunny day in the morning hours preferably during 9 – 10 am.
After 10 days of lime application, apply cow dung @ 200 kg /ha, Urea @ 25 kg/ha and SSP @ 20 kg/ha.
If the temperature is too high, put some floating aquatic plant in one corner of the pond to provide shelter for the stocked fish. The covered area should not exceed one-fourth of the total water surface area.
Prevent entry of surface runoff water into the pond. Strengthen the outlet
Continuously monitor fish activities and movement every morning, noon and evening. At early morning hours the fish may come to surface to gulp air or breathe. If such symptoms are observed, immediately mix the pond water by splashing or by pumping fresh water from nearby sources.
Sometime there may be excessive growth of algae (algal bloom) due to manuring and leftover feed in the pond. In such condition, the pond water turns deep green/ brown and there will be layer of algae on the water surface. Stop feeding and fertilization during this period till the bloom disappears.
For ponds where fingerlings have not been stocked
Ponds that are filled with water, stocking to be completed. Release fingerlings in early hours or in the evening, when the temperature of water is cool.
For ponds with 4-5 feet depth, 3-4 species composition should be stocked.
Precautionary measures
Sometimes due to heavy rainfall, there are chances of water overflowing in some ponds. This may result in escaping of stocked fish. To avoid escape of fish, provide net/mesh barricade or fencing at the point of overflow or around the pond surface area.
Application of lime, fertilizers and manure should not be done on rainy or cloudy days.
