Crop Advisories

Short duration pulse crops green gram or green manuring crops like dhaincha, sunhemp etc should be planted as pre-kharif crop in fallow paddy lowland/ Terrace Rice field to enhance the soil fertility and increase farm income.

Crop rotation should be carried out as it may interrupt the relationship between pests and host plant.

Inspection for insects, rats and mites at fortnightly intervals should be carried out in storage area where paddy is stored.

Adjustment of time of sowing and harvesting should be done to avoid the peak season of pest attack.

Grow trap crop on the borders of main fields before the actual sowing of crop to trap pest and develop natural enemies.

Crop rotation and inter-cropping also help in conservation of defenders.

Livestock Advisories

Poultry

Provide warmth to poultry birds during cold by using electric bulb in the shed.

Artificial heating should be provided during the night time to protect the birds from fall of night temperature and reduce the incidence of mortality.

Cover poultry house with gunny bags/ polythene sheet to prevent the exposure of animal to cool night. Heating through artificial light of electric bulb during night may also be given to chicks which are less than 21 days old. Chicks require higher temperature for their survival. Temperature at hatching is to be reduced by 20C per week for good growth of the chicks. Range of relative humidity for the development of chicks should remain between 55 - 60%.

Good ventilation provides a comfortable environment; too dusty environment irritates the respiratory tract of the chicks. Besides dust is one of the vehicles of transmission of diseases.

Good management and sanitation are the best ways to avoid infectious disease in poultry. Provide ample quantity of clean drinking water. Avoid dampness, litter should be periodically changed Avoid feeding of mouldy feed. Don’t make sudden changes in feed. Vaccination of birds as per the recommended age.

Egg laying is reduced in winter, therefore to increase the production the temperature is to be increased.

Piggery

Housing system must provide conditions conducive to comfort, good health, growth and performance at all stages of the pig’s life. Provide warm bedding (may increase temperature) and consider installing bulbs too.

At birth, pigs require a temperature around 330C. As the suckling pigs gain weight, they begin to tolerate lower temperature. Provide artificial lightning and warmth.

For piglets, pen should be maintained at 24ºC to 28ºC until the piglets is three or four days old and at 18ºC to 22ºC until the piglets are approximately six weeks old. Heat lamps/bulbs should be hung 45 cm from the floor and suitably protected.

High energy feed should be given to compensate energy loss due to cold. Protect from draft.

CSF (Classical Swine Fever) may occur in pig at all stages. It is a viral flu and highly contagious. Clinical signs include high fever, skin lesions, convulsions, constipation followed by diarrhoea and vomiting, less appetite. Once the symptoms is noticed, immediately informed the nearby veterinary doctor.

Sick or injured animals should be attended to immediately, preferably move to a warm comfortable environment. Medications should be used only on the advice of a veterinarian, following recommended treatment

Fisheries

Discourage entry of birds and other animals into the pond

Final harvesting should be done by 3rd or 4th week.
