Nagaland with 89% of its total geographical area under the ownership of private individuals and communities offers a unique scope for raising bamboo plantation. As Nagaland has only 6% forest managed by the Forest Department, plantation is promoted on individual landholdings as well as community lands.
Bamboo is found extensively all over Nagaland which occurs as a predominant plant in portions of the districts of Dimapur, Peren, Mon and Mokokchung; while, it is readily found mixed with other forest species in all other districts of the state. So far 52 species have been identified in Nagaland. With the announcement of the Nagaland state Bamboo Policy on March 15, 2004 in the state, along with the establishment of the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA) Nagaland is the first state in the North-East to adopt a concrete policy on harnessing bamboo resources.
