Western Chakhesang GBs Association condemns assault on WCYO president

Dimapur, May 9 (MExN): The Western Chakhesang GBs Association on May 8 expressed deep shock and outrage over what it termed the “brutal and unprovoked” assault on Wekupe Therie, president of the Western Chakhesang Youth Organisation, allegedly by Inato Chishi and his accomplices on May 2 at Naga United Village.

In a statement issued by its Media Cell, the association said the incident was not an isolated one but part of a “disturbing trend where dialogue is replaced by violence.”

“The mentality displayed is deranged where even minor issues that could be solved amicably are met with extreme brutality,” the statement said.

The association alleged that the WCYO president, described as an elected youth leader serving the community, was attacked “without any rhyme or reason” and “without provocation whatsoever.”

Calling it “an assault on the Naga community as a whole,” the association said that if a common citizen could be treated in such a manner, the safety of every ordinary citizen was at stake.

The association demanded the immediate arrest of Inato Chishi and all accomplices allegedly involved in the incident. It also sought a time-bound and impartial investigation, along with the filing of charges under relevant sections of law.

Further, it called for public assurance from the district administration and police that such acts of hooliganism would face “zero tolerance,” and sought medical and legal support for the victim to ensure full recovery and justice.

The association also appealed to civil society organisations, hohos, student bodies and “right-thinking citizens” to unequivocally condemn the incident.

“Silence and inaction today will only embolden such elements tomorrow,” the statement added.

Stating that the customary institutions of the Chakhesangs have always stood for peace, respect and justice, the association asserted that it would not allow violence to become the “new normal.”
