Winter mirth hangs in fine balance

KOHIMA: One can only hope that the ghastly aftermath of drunkenness and road mishaps that occurred during the conclusion of Hornbill Festival is not repeated. For, there are three other action-filled days ahead as the government prepares for ‘Culmination programme of Year of Youth Empowerment” from December 13-15. 

The three-day extravaganza in the state capital will include all types of events ranging from sports to cultural items, beauty pageants to musical road shows.

Of all the highlights, Miss Nagaland Contest slated for December 13 evening is expected to put the audience in a tizzy with about 23 beauties from all districts readying for the show. 

A new attraction is sky diving to be displayed by “Akash” the team of Indian air force which will no doubt be another event to thrill the crowd. Parachuting is supposed to be displayed for the first time in the state, so also in the whole of the north east. The team had displayed their skills in New Delhi during the 1980 Asian Games. 

The best local bands will also entertaining the denizens of the capital on Monday evening as they set themselves for the street performances.

This is where the government will have to take care to prevent drunks and anti-social elements from spoiling evenings. On the night the Kisama festival concluded, at least five persons were injured in road mishaps, some of them allegedly due to drunken driving.

To boost youth empowerment, all departments too will be setting up information centers at the stadium, where all information pertaining to job opportunities will be made available. 
Different events are being held at different venues. Roads shows will be held at Quasqui Plaza, Fire Brigade lake area, High School Junction and TCP gate. Beauty pageant, athletics and cultural items at Indira Gandhi Stadium, while TT Stadium, KVSA ground, Indoor stadium, Academy Hall, Thizama ground will also host different games and sports.

Fashion Show, football for boys and girls, folk songs and dance, taekwondo, Sepak Takraw will be other events of the grand finale.

The state government has also issued about 1000 entry tickets to cultural troupes from different districts for witnessing the “Jay Sean” concert at the Local ground on December 13 evening. 

The grand culmination function will be at Kohima local ground.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who inspected the ongoing preparations for these grand events today, said that declaration of 2005, as “Year of Youth Empowerment” was only a beginning.

“Youth are our assets if we utilize them in a proper way”, said Rio adding that “if we don’t it’s a liability”.

The Chief Minister also went on to state that the government is all out to give youth an opportunity to grow so as to make the society progress.

With North East sports festival only a month away here at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, endless activity for Nagaland is being keenly awaited.
