Along with the rest of the country, Wokha celebrated the 79th Independence Day at Public Ground, Wokha, with Salhoutuonuo Kruse, Minister for Women Resource Development & Horticulture, as the special guest.
The celebration began with flag hoisting in all government offices, institutions, official residences, private residences, shops, and business establishments. As part of the outreach programme, institutional visits were made to the Foundling Harbour Children’s Home by Team Metamorphosis, Sub-Jail inmates by the Red Cross, and Wokha Senior Citizens Home by SBI Main Branch, Wokha.
At the public ground, the programme was compered by Dr Alice Kenye, Assistant Professor and Dr Khyopenthung Tsopoe, Vice Principal, both from Mount Tiyi College, Wokha. The parade review was conducted by the T Relo Aye, Superintendent of Police, Wokha, followed by the hoisting of the National Flag, Rashtriya Salute, and National Anthem. The special guest inspected the parade contingents and delivered the Independence Day speech.
The March Past was led by SDPO Sangthing Khiam with contingents from DEF Wokha, 7th NAP, Home Guards & Civil Defence, and Ex-Servicemen. District Awards were presented, after which the special guest inaugurated the stalls. A State Lunch was hosted at the DC’s official residence.
The programme also featured an exhibition volleyball match between the District Sports Council, Wokha and Heads of Departments, followed by the finals of the Inter-High School Volleyball League, prize distribution, and Beating of Retreat by DEF Wokha.
District Awards were presented to Lichumo Odyuo, District Programme Officer, DAPCU, Chief Medical Office, Wokha; Meribeni M Ezung, Radiographer, Dr Motsuo Memorial District Hospital, Wokha; and Abeno Ovung, Planning & Livelihood Expert, DMU Wokha, Wokha Forest.
The District Commendation Certificates were presented to K Nchumbemo Ezung, ABSI, 7th NAP Bn., Bhandari; Y Yentsao Shitio, MTS, Office of the District Election Officer, Wokha; Lothungbeni Humtsoe, Field Investigator, Office of the District Economics & Statistics Officer, Wokha; and Shancho Ezung, MTS, Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Wokha.
