The Social Welfare Department of Wokha, under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) project, commemorated National Girl Child Day on January 24, celebrating the theme "Empowering Girls for a Bright Future." The celebrations, held across the district, were part of a larger initiative to raise awareness on the importance of protecting and promoting the well-being of girls.
In a bid to reach grassroots communities, the department visited Anganwadi centres throughout Wokha district. With 124 centres grouped into 32 clusters, the celebrations were spread over multiple locations rather than a single central event.
This strategy aimed to ensure broader engagement and involvement, as explained by the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) Wokha, Renchano Odyuo. She stated, "This year, we wanted to reach out to the grassroots level, which is why we chose to celebrate in 32 locations instead of holding a single formal event."
The events, organised under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme, featured a variety of activities designed to engage the community, including sweet races and moulding competitions. Winners of these competitions were awarded prizes sponsored by the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign. Parents and children from all walks of life participated enthusiastically, contributing to the success of the initiative.
Additionally, Odyuo highlighted that a special programme was held on January 22 at Englan Range to mark the 10-year anniversary of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign. She underscored the significance of direct community engagement in promoting the cause and enhancing awareness, adding that these grassroots efforts play a critical role in shaping positive change for girls in the region.
