Wokha district in Nagaland was today felicitated as one of the ten districts in India for undertaking “good works in generating awareness and outreach activities” under Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme.

 

Good Performing States and Districts’ under BBBP programme were given the felicitations by the Union Minister of Women and Child Development and Textiles, Smriti Zubin Irani at a function in New Delhi on September 6.

 

 

The Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, Dr Manazir Jeelani Samoon received the award on behalf of the district during the felicitation.

 

 

The WCD Minister later took to micro blogging site Twitter on Friday and tweeted about the event in Nagamese, the lingua franca of the state.

 

“India pura de kun kun district #BetiBachaoBetiPadhao mission laga awareness spread kuriatey kam bhal kurishey, taikhan ke moikhan bhal award dibole ase” (We will award those districts who excelled in spreading awareness on the BBBP Scheme) while sharing a video highlighting activities undertaken by Wokha District administration under the sxheme.

 

“Wokha District Nagaland BBBP Team para bishi bhal kam kuria nimitey tangor congratulations!,” (Congratulations to Wokha BBBP team for their hard work), she added.

  

 

The other districts recognised under same category as Wokha were:  Tiruvallur (Tamil Nadu), Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur (Himachal Pradesh) Kishtwar (J&K), Gadag (Karnataka), Farrukhabad (Uttar Pradesh), and Nagaur (Rajasthan).

 

The state of Haryana, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh were also felicitated for improvement in Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) while ten other districts across India were feted for improvement in SRB.  They were: East Kameng (Arunachal Pradesh), Mahendragarh and Bhiwani (Haryana), Udham Singh Nagar (Uttarakhand), Namakkal (Tamil Nadu), Jalgaon (Maharashtra) Etawah (Uttar Pradesh), Raigarh (Chhattisgarh), Rewa (Madhya Pradesh) and Jodhpur (Rajasthan).

 

 

3-point improvement in sex ratio at birth: Irani

Meanwhile, speaking on the occasion, the WCD Minister Irani stated that there has been a 13-point improvement in the sex ratio from 918 in 2014-15 to 931 in 2018-19, informed an official release from the ministry.

 

While acknowledging the contribution of each district in improvement of SRB, she also urged states to aim to double it in the coming years, added the release issued via PIB Delhi.

 

Kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh was specially mentioned for registering a sharp improvement in SRB from 807 in 2014-15 to 1039 in 2018-19.

 

“The collective efforts of the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministries of Human Resource Development and Health and Family Welfare the girl child is now protected from birth till the rest of her life,” Irani further maintained.

 

Minister of State of WCD, Debasree Chaudhuri, who was guest of honour, stressed on the need for more concrete steps to further improve the skewed child sex ratio.

 

Stating that the success of BBBP scheme largely depends on the committed participation of State governments, district administrations and the active support of community members, she appealed to every citizen to become a part of the social change programme of BBBP.

 

A slide show of innovations for implementation of the BBBP scheme by States/ Districts was shown followed by short videos of innovative interventions undertaken by the winning states and districts, the release said.  

 

The BBBP scheme was launched on January 22, 2015 to address the declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR) and related issues of women empowerment over a life-cycle. It is being implemented in 640 districts and all districts are covered through advocacy and media campaign.

 

The latest reports on State/UT-wise SRB data for the period 2014-15 and 2018-19, shows an improving trend at the national level in SRB from 918 to 931, it added.
