Wokha, October 12 (MExN): Wokha district observed International Girl Child Day on the theme ‘Invest in Girls’ Right: our leadership and well-being’ with IPS, Aotula T Imchen, Wokha SP as the theme speaker at Tiyi Hall, Wokha town on October 11. 

According to a DIPR report, in her speech Aotula T Imchen said that the world has 52% of the Women population and with that population statistics, ‘we are celebrating Girl Child Day.’

She reminded the gathering that it is important to celebrate Girls Child Day in order to educate and provide them guidance on their rights. She emphasised the immense potential each girl possesses and discussed the inequalities that exist, both intentionally and unintentionally, between men and women due to social and cultural norms. “We have the incredible potential as women and girls, yet there are certain social laws which divide boys and girls from the moment you are born,” she remarked. 

Highlighting the challenges women face, such as the gender pay gap, limited access to healthcare, and educational deprivation, Imchen stressed that leadership quality should be inculcated to a child girl and invest in economic empowerment for women and girls.

She urged the girls to be careful about menstrual and sexual hygiene and health for our own well-being. Further she encouraged the girls to read books and focus not only on academic books, but to also explore books that provide knowledge and insight as it will teach them how to express themselves. 

Dr Thungchanbeni, DPO emphasised on girl child well-being stating that according to the World Health Organization, health is defined as the complete state of physical, mental and social well being. She states that at the adolescent period of a child’s life, physical changes take place and every girl needs to be educated about physical changes and has the right to know all about physical changes of her body to avoid confusion.

Luchui Fithu, EAC gave the welcome address. A short movie on teenage pregnancy was displayed followed by discussion. The programme was chaired by Dr Wonchano E Enny, DMC, DHEW.
