Wokha, January 28 (MExN): In a decisive move to address a severe water crisis, the Wokha Town Council has announced a “complete ban” with immediate effect on all borewell drilling activities within its jurisdiction.

The order, issued by Renbomo Ezung, ADC & Executive Officer of the Council, cited the “alarming decline” of the crucial Etsutchukha water source. The directive linked the water source's unsustainability directly to “excessive and unregulated groundwater extraction.”

“The ban has been imposed in the interest of environmental conservation and water security,” stated the order.

The comprehensive ban will be applied to new borewell drilling for domestic, commercial, agriculture purposes; deepening or re-drilling of existing borewells; any related groundwater extraction activities without explicit authorization.

It stated that this order will remain in force “until further notice or until a comprehensive assessment confirms the safe and sustainable restoration of the water source.”

The order emphasised that the directives were “issued in the interest of protecting and preserving the water source for present and future generations.”
