Workshop on ‘counter wildlife and biodiversity conservation’ in Wokha

Wokha, March 12 (MExN): One-day workshop on ‘counter wildlife and biodiversity conservation’ organised by Nagaland Forest Department Wildlife Conservation-India and Nagaland State Biodiversity Board was held at Tiyi Hall, Wokha on March 12.

A DIPR report stated that ADC, Wokha Lankonsen T Tsanglao urged all section of people to support the forest department in their fight against protecting our environment.

Nagaland State Biodiversity Board, Chairman, Satya Prakash Tripathi, IFS (Retd) shared on various aspects on community involvement in conservation of wildlife. He said that to ensure that wildlife management policies are effectively implemented such workshops and trainings are essential to sensitize the public. 

Team Leader, WCS-India, Dev Prakash Bankhwal, IFS (Retd) said that the primary threat to the survival of wildlife is due to destruction fragmentation or degradation of habitat, when ecosystem changes dramatically by activities of human being it become no longer for the wildlife to survive. He stated that community need to create a certified wildlife habitat and preservation of forest so that animals can use the water source, food and find a good shelter place that wildlife need to survive. He also emphasised on illegal wildlife trade which he said is a very serious offence and called upon the Police department and Forest department to work together in enforcing acts to control such menace.

Steve Odyuo from Natural Nagas said there are various human activities that results in wildlife decline and other activities like hunting, illegal mining, poaching illegal use of chemicals in the river and exploitation of forest resources. “Because of such activities it greatly affects our biodiversity and ecosystem services and suggested that these thing need to be seriously addressed,” he stated. Odyuo appealed the department to organise more of such campaigns, workshops and trainings to sensitize the people.

In the technical session, resource persons for the workshop are Satya Prakash Tripathi, IFS (Retd), Dev Prakash Bankhwal, IFS (Retd) Rishika Gupta, WCS-India, Shubhra Sotie, Suman W M Sivachar IFS, DFO, Wokha and D P Bankhwal IFS (Retd).

Others topics included community conservation of biodiversity in Nagaland, issues related to human-elephant conflict in Wokha, mitigation and adaption in human-elephant conflict, identification of commonly traded species and their parts in trade field tips, sample collection, on search and seizure court procedure, preparation of legal documents- label seizure list, sketch map, arrest memo, confession statement, forwarding note, complain (POR).
