Kohima | February 17 : The wide potential of internet has attracted the fancy criminal offenders, terrorist and other outlaw to use internet as the potential media for committing offences where internet, computer and mobile users should be aware of the dangers posed by criminal masterminds behind cyber crime and take due precaution, said commissioner secretary, Communication & Information Technology (C&IT), K.T Sukhalu IAS, today at RIELIT.
A two days awareness cum workshop is being organized by RIELIT in collaboration with department of communication and information of technology, (C & IT) Government of Nagaland with an aim to spread awareness on information security, treats and vulnerabilities, Cyber crime and to facilitate participants in utilization of various tools and technologies to be used for protection of information, networks and system.
Speaking at the inaugural function as the chief guest Sukhalu, said the imperative role played by computer and internet in the dissemination of information and knowledge is remarkable, however the increase in the use of modern technologies in daily life is also a corresponding increase in cyber crimes and has become potential source for committing property crimes such as credit card, financial frauds, counterfeit documents and larceny, crime against humans pornography, threats, stalking and sexual abuse of children and specific computer/internet crimes such as virus attacks, data manipulation and web site hacking.
Stating that in spite of the very high punishment prescribed by law, such as criminals are on the rise, Sukhalu said it is necessary to create awareness on cyber security so that people may not fall in the traps set by cyber criminals.
With cyber forensic Lab installed at RIELIT, Sukhalu expressed his hope that it will create awareness about information security and cyber crimes not only in government sector but also among the citizens, also extend support to police and judiciary to solve cyber crimes cases in the state.
Commissioner Secretary added that cyber security is a major challenge for all when most of the work will be dependent on information and communication technology as the security is not rigid or static but always evolving and “We must be prepared for it”.
He also called upon the officers, head of departments (HODs) to upload detail information in their department website so that people at the rural areas will have access what is taking place in the department and also to let the workshop information reach to the administrative heads.
Director RIELIT Kohima, Bodhachandra Singh in his brief address said the project is to deal cyber crimes and 50 government officers will be trained in the next one year on cyber forensic in the state.
An experts from the ministry of C & IT, government of India, Omveer Singh, additional director/ scientist ‘E’ CERT-In, and S. Babu, Scientist ‘C’, are the main resource persons where AHODs/HODs, middle level officer, IT nodal officer, law enforcement agencies are taking part in the two days awareness cum workshop. Earlier Lanuwabang scientist ‘C’ delivered welcome address while Daniel Meren Scientist ‘C’ gave a brief presentation about RIELIT. Vote of thanks was delivered by Scientist Morimeba ‘B’.
