Dimapur, August 4 (MExN): District Hospital, Dimapur organised World Breastfeeding Week 2024 at Paediatric OPD on August 1. The Week long observation will culminate on August 7.
Pediatrician, District Hospital Dimapur Dr Obed urged mothers to exclusively breastfeed their newborn for six months and highlighted that exclusive breastfeeding is beneficial for both the mother and child.
For the child, breast milk provides complete food and contains all nutrition needed by a child, stated a press release from CMO Dimapur.

He said that it has the perfect mix of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals and added that Breast Milk also contains antibodies which improve the child’s immune system and protect against infection. It also promotes brain development and reduces the risk of respiratory tract infection and diarrhea, the Pediatrician said.
He further said that Colostrum which is a thick yellowish liquid produced in the first few days after birth is rich in antibodies and nutrients. It is considered a precious gift for newborns.

Speaking about the importance for the mother, breastfeeding is beneficial as it helps in uterus contraction, weight loss, and lowers the risk of postpartum depression, breast and ovarian cancers. It also delays menstruation and strengthen uterus muscles. He further informed that World Health Organization also recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and to be continued along with appropriate complementary foods up to 2 years.
Dr Obed said it also help to establish a strong bond between mother and child.
