Phek, December 5 (MExN): The ICAR–KVK Phek observed Kisan Gosthi-cum-World Soil Day on December 5 under the global theme “Healthy Soil, Healthy Cities.”
The programme brought together scientists, officials, and farmers to highlight the importance of soil health for sustainable agriculture and environmental well-being. The programme began with a welcome address by Dr Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Senior Scientist & Head, ICAR–KVK Phek, who expressed concern over the declining soil health in the region and urged farmers to adopt organic and eco-friendly farming practices to sustain soil vitality.
Dr T Esther Longkumer, Chief Technical Officer (Soil Science), delivered a talk on soil health management and presented an overview of the current soil status in the district. She emphasised the need for regular soil testing and balanced nutrient application. A presentation on regenerative horticultural practices was delivered by Manjunath K S, Subject Matter Specialist, who highlighted techniques to restore soil fertility and improve crop productivity.
Zalekhu Lohe, Agriculture Inspector, SDAO Pfutsero, spoke on various government agricultural schemes and underscored the importance of adopting scientific soil management practices.
As part of the event, Soil Health Cards and agricultural inputs were distributed to farmers. An exhibition showcasing agriculture and allied sector activities was also displayed, drawing enthusiastic participation from the farming community.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Harini KR, SMS (Animal Science) who appreciated the active involvement of farmers and stakeholders in promoting sustainable soil management.
