World TB Day observed across the state

Dimapur, March 25 (MExN): With the rest of the world, Dimapur District observed World TB Day Rally on March 24, 2011, organised by Greenwood Higher School NCC and Health Clubs with the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Sukhato Sema as chief guest. He highlighted Tuberculosis control programme in the District and shared how the student community can help in creating awareness to the masses to avail free diagnosis and treatment of TB under RNTCP. The Chief Guest flagged off the rally at the school premises and the students marched up to the City tower holding placards and banners with important key messages.

Principal Director Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Imtimeren Jamir said Tuberculosis (TB) is the single most infectious disease leading to the death among the adult population in the world. He was speaking as the Chief Guest on the World TB day at Phek Town Hall on 24th March 2011, and added that our Country is the highest number of active TB cases in the world and accounts for one fifth of the global TB incident, as a result the disease affect the most economically productive age of the population that it causes direct impact on the economy of the individual, family and eventually the nation as a whole. He also opined that, the RNTCP programme gains even more significance because of the nature of it relationship with HIV/AIDS as TB is the most common opportunistic infection among HIV infected people. We are now in the midway point of the second phase of RNTCP that aims to stop TB by 2015. He also called upon to join hands together to fight towards elimination of this treated disease from our state as well as our country.
Deputy Commissioner Phek, Mikha Lomi who also the chairman of District Health Committee delivered key note address and said that in olden days TB disease has treated fear psychosis among the people however advance science and technology the phobia of TB was less serious concern and added that TB disease is invented preventable and curable. He also said that due to lack of awareness and negligence of the people the disease had been spread more and more for which he called upon public leaders and the participants to create awareness among the people and also coordinate with the health workers department.

Along with the rest of the world Mon also celebrated World Tuberculosis Da with the theme ‘On the move against tuberculosis...transforming the fight towards elimination’ at DC’s Conference Hall on March 24, 2011 with Deputy Commissioner Mon, Dinesh Kumar IAS as the Chief Guest. DC speaking on the occasion lauded the DTO and the staffs for effectively implementing the RNTCP (Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme) programme in Mon. He also said awareness should be spread about the RNTCP programme even in the remotest village. He also stressed on the co-relation between HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. Social discrimination against TB patients should be eliminated as anyone could be affected said D.C. He congratulated the DOTs providers for their sincere effort in carrying out their duties and also lauded them to give proper counselling before starting the treatment.
