WSSO consultants for better sanitation system in Nagaland

Kohima | June 28 : Having fully equipped with the basic knowledge and skills from the just concluded 3 weeks long orientation & capacity building training programme, the newly recruited Water & Sanitation Support Organization (WSSO) /District Water & Sanitation Mission (DWSM) consultants and chemists are all set to venture out for better management of water and sanitation system in the state.
The training, which started on June 7 and concluded here this evening at PHED conference hall, was specifically designed to build capacity of WWSO/DWSM consultants and chemists in response to the task of generating awareness on sustainable water and sanitation in the state.
Speaking at the valedictory and presentation of certificates and ID cards function to the successful consultants, PHED chief engineer and chairman WSSO Er Mhondamo Ovung in his speech challenged the consultants to be worthy to their respective assignments. Expressing optimism that the consultants will be asset to the PHE department, Er Ovung called upon them to be sincere and dedicated to their assignments. Stating that the Government of India is giving much importance towards sustainable water and sanitation, he said “if we work seriously the centrally sponsored scheme will not be abolished but will continue.” In this, the chief engineer impressed the consultants not to think their job as temporary but to work with sincerity and dedication. Regretting that by nature Nagas take things casually, he said the time has come to take things seriously and be prepared for the works. “Let us change the earlier attitude of casualization,” the chief engineer challenged and at the same time asked them to be serious and worthy to their assignments. Er Ovung also challenged them to work together as a team and contribute for better Nagaland.
WSSO director Er Kevisekho Kruse said the week long training programme made the consultants aware of the various aspects of PHED, method of reaching out to grassroot level, experiment on water treatment and laboratory, public relation exercise etc. Through the field visit, they also interacted with villagers on the problem and deficiency of water and sanitation and also identify solution to address it.
Also congratulating all the consultants for successful completion of the training, PHED additional chief engineer Er K.G. Sumi challenged them to do their best to bring change in the state. Meanwhile, the consultants in their feedback termed the training programme as informative and educative. Equipping with the basic knowledge and skills, they maintained that they are now in position to perform their duty efficiently and diligently. Stating that the training was a life transforming experience to many, another consultant came into conclusion that since water and sanitation form integral part of life, everyone must take the responsibility to generate awareness in the grassroot level. Also terming the training as challenging, a consultant said they will try to be ambassador of PHED and create adequate awareness for the benefit of the masses. “We are all well equipped now,” maintained another consultant and pledged to do its best in their assignments.
Mentionably, WSSO has been set up in the state under Odisha State Water and Sanitation Mission with effect from May 1, 2010. It will deal with all software aspect of rural water supply and total sanitation campaign, institutionalizing community participation in rural Odisha. It will facilitate formation of VWSCs for preparation of village water security plan, its operation, management and maintenance. It will take up evaluation/impact assessment studies/research and development in WATSAN sector through outsourcing. It will take up HRD/IEC/MIS/NRWQMS/water quality testing. It will aid and advise DWSMs on preparation of rural water security plan, formulation of rural water supply projects, reconstitution etc. It will explore mobilization of support from external agencies.
