Maternity ward of Dimapur district hospital to get facelift on April 14, 2012
Dimapur, April 9 (MExN): Young intellectual Nagas are ready to take initiatives and combat apathy to enable social change in what ever small way they can. The Facebook groups The Naga Blog (TNB) and Nagaland Open Online Barter or Sell (NOOBS) have been taking initiatives to spread social activism. The campaigns that the two groups have taken include recent aid campaigns for victims of the Sikkim, Burma camp fire and another in Mon where a fire ravaged a village.
TNB and NOOBS is taking up another campaign called “Let’s make a difference for the little ones” – this one is to give a facelift to the maternity ward of Dimapur district hospital on April 14, 2012. It all started when a concerned blogger posted pictures of the district Hospital Dimapur. The heart-rending pictures of dirty, clogged toilets, dilapidated windows and unhygienic conditions of the ‘health’ wards of District Hospital Dimapur sent The Naga Blog members cringing. Discussions followed and the bloggers finally decided to clean up the mess instead of condemning it or blaming the government.
After intensely deliberating over the matter through online discussions some of the administrators of The Naga Blog visited the hospital and spoke to the authorities and decided to choose the 32-bedded maternity ward for the campaign.
“The response to the campaign is enormous and quite overwhelming” said one of the TNB administrators, Vikeduo Linyü. He said there are instances that speak volume of the enthusiasm and the passion of the young Nagas. For instance, a blogger from Tuensang district credited Rs 100 worth cell phone recharge cards to another member’s number in Kohima so that the Kohima blogger can donate the money worth the recharge card on his behalf as there are no contact points in Tuensang and banking transactions are also problematic. Linyu also pointed out that members as well as non-members of the two groups are stepping forward to contribute to the campaign. While some contribute financially, others have volunteered to do manual works. The members are to repair the windows, paint the walls and replace non-working fans, clean the clogged toilets and surroundings.
Bazo Kire, a member, in charge of online transactions said that the response of the Nagas working and residing outside Nagaland is very encouraging and many are contributing generously. She said many organizations from all the districts are willingly contributing. “With the fund constraints the district hospital Dimapur authorities have and the profiles of the people who access their service, the members decided to take positive initiative for the hospital and help them in whatever ways we can”. The hospital belongs to the people and each one of them, as citizens of Nagaland, should take the responsibility of contributing towards the welfare of it, she said.
Another member, T Senti Aier has also been up on her toes for the past few weeks collecting donations from different contact points in Dimapur. She said there are people who are non-members or not on Facebook. Yet these people are calling up, wanting to know about the initiatives taken by TNB and NOOBS and inquiring about the contact points.
“Such response from across Nagaland is what motivates the bloggers to take initiatives whenever there is the need for one” added Aier. She mentioned that any financial contributions, material donations or physical assistance would be appreciated and urged everyone to come forward and be a part of making a difference for the little ones.
