Dimapur, March 6 (MExN): A ‘Gaonbura’ (GB) organization in Zunheboto today demanded ‘rectification’ of the 33% reservation of seats for women in the district’s town council wards. The Zunheboto Area GBs’ Association (ZAGA) has demanded that the seats for women in the district be reduced to 4 from the reserved 5 seats or the town council elections would be boycotted. The GBs organization issued a copy of a letter addressed to the chief secretary of Nagaland today, saying that the GBs are “embarrassed” that out of 13 seats, five were reserved for women.
“…it could not be justified; reserving 5 seats for women has been done through some few vested individuals interest,” the GBs claimed.
The ZAGA demanded “downsizing” to 4 seats for women “as per the percentage failing which the Zunheboto Sadar GBs Association shall strive and opposed the government decisions for reserving 33% for women and shall not accept the conditions for the ongoing civic polls election but….shall boycotted the civic election till the demand I settled at the earliest,” the GBs stated. The letter was appended by Vikato, president and Toniho, general secretary.
