Zunheboto Government College (ZGC) observed its 32nd parting social under the theme “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened” at the college auditorium on April 17.

Dr Tiamenla Phom, Additional SP, Zunheboto, graced the occasion as the guest speaker. In her address, she described the moment as both powerful and emotional for students stepping into the real world, a world, she noted, “is not like your semester examinations; it does not have syllabus, no previous question papers, and no grace marks.”

She emphasised that opportunities do not wait and encouraged students to be proactive and prepared every day. “If you are late, someone else will take that opportunity,” she said. Acknowledging the realities of life, she added that failure is inevitable and serves as a pillar of success.

Drawing from her 15 years of service, Dr Phom shared that people approach the police not in times of celebration, but with challenges and problems. She noted that many young people lack direction and inner peace, urging students to stay grounded and make responsible choices. She cautioned that having one’s name in police records can adversely affect both career and life, and stressed that it is not something to take lightly.

She further remarked that the lure of quick success often leads individuals astray, sometimes due to financial pressures. Advising students to be cautious, she urged them to carefully evaluate job opportunities and advertisements, as these decisions can shape their future. She encouraged students to understand their own skills and abilities, and to make informed choices, especially in a state like Nagaland where unemployment remains a concern.

“Perfect opportunities rarely come; we must create them,” she stated, adding that waiting for ideal salaries or comfortable jobs may lead to missed chances. She encouraged students to start small, as it helps build experience, discipline and direction in life.

Highlighting key principles for success, she stressed the importance of discipline, being mindful of one’s company, and respecting the sacrifices of those who have supported them. She noted that with discipline and determination, one’s family background does not define success. “You may not be able to control every situation in life, but you can control what comes next,” she concluded.

Earlier, Dr R Bendangtemjen, Principal ZGC, in his greeting address, spoke about the FYUGP (Four-Year Undergraduate Programme) and also highlighted the All Sumi Kiphimi Kuqhakulu (SKK) free coaching programme. He reminded students to stay connected with the college as proud alumni.

The programme featured special performances, speeches, a duet, and a solo. A farewell address was delivered by Ayeto Aye, former GS, ZGCSU. The welcome address was given by Vipeto, GS, ZGCSU, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Alomi T Yepthomi, Organising Secretary, ZGCSU. The event was moderated by Nisana T Zhimo, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science.
