The district-level launch of the Stop Diarrhea Campaign 2026 under the theme "Stop Diarrhoea Through Hygiene and ORS" was held at the DC Conference Hall, Zunheboto, on June 16. The campaign will be observed across the district from June 16 to July 31.
The programme was graced by Deputy Commissioner Zunheboto Dharam Raj, as the Guest of Honour.
Addressing the gathering, DC Raj stressed the need for greater public awareness and education to combat diseases. He urged the public to maintain proper hygiene standards, consume only properly cooked food, and avoid feeding potentially unsafe food items to young children. He also advised residents to be cautious about drinking water from untreated sources and encouraged the use of safe drinking water and water purification methods whenever necessary.
The Deputy Commissioner noted that “Diarrhea can result from multiple factors, including food contamination and unsafe water, and can be prevented through education and precaution remains the most effective solution.” He highlighted the importance of Zinc tablets as immunity boosters and encouraged healthcare workers and community leaders to spread awareness among the public, adding that “Remedies lies with our kitchen to cure and prevent Diarrhoea, it’s just that people are not aware about it.”
Stating that education is the key to the success of any public health campaign, Raj expressed hope that the initiative would help reduce diarrhoea-related illnesses and save lives across the district.
Dr Heto Swu, DPO (RCH & UIP), while delivering the welcome and keynote address, highlighted the importance of timely treatment of diarrhoea, particularly among children and the elderly, who are most vulnerable to severe complications if left unattended. “Diarrhoea is a preventable and treatable condition, even homemade Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) can play a crucial role in preventing dehydration and saving lives,” Dr Swu added.
Dr Swu further outlined the objectives of the campaign, which include ensuring adequate coverage of all children suffering from diarrhoea, promoting preventive measures and awareness, strengthening the skills and capacity of healthcare workers, and creating public awareness on the use of ORS, Zinc supplementation, and proper hand hygiene practices.
Earlier, the event was chaired by Rosemary Vitoli, District Programme Manager (NHM), Zunheboto. A practical demonstration on the preparation and administration of ORS was conducted by Amenli Aye, Staff Nurse, RBSK. The programme concluded with a District Task Force (DTF) meeting on Immunization.
