The Zunheboto District Taekwondo Association (ZDTA) team was felicitated by Sümi civil society organisations and members of the public at the Main Town Police Point, Project Colony, Zunheboto, on Friday following their commendable performance at the 36th Nagaland State Taekwondo (WT) Championship and Under-14 Catch Them Young Tournament 2026, held from July 28 to 30 at IG Stadium, Kohima.
The reception was organised jointly by the Sümi Hoho, Zunheboto Town GB Association, Zunheboto Town Council, Dobashis (DBs), and parents of the players in recognition of the team’s achievement.
Speaking at the programme, ZDTA President Hokugha Yeptho said that although many districts in Nagaland have been participating in the state championship for over 35 years, Zunheboto only joined the competition recently, making this year’s participation the district’s second appearance.
He expressed gratitude to all sections of society, civil organisations, parents, coaches, and officials for their unwavering support and cooperation. He also commended the athletes for representing the district with dedication and bringing laurels to Zunheboto by securing an overall sixth position in the state championship.
The Zunheboto contingent won a total of 16 medals, comprising 2 Gold, 5 Silver, and 9 Bronze medals.
Yeptho further noted that the number of athletes representing the district has increased significantly compared to the inaugural participation, reflecting the growing interest and development of taekwondo in Zunheboto.
Addressing the gathering, Sümi Hoho Vice President Kikheto Muru congratulated the medal winners and advised them to remain humble despite their success.
He said that victories should never lead to arrogance, as overconfidence often results in failure. Instead, he encouraged the young athletes to treat the achievement as a stepping stone towards greater success, maintain a broad outlook, and continue bringing more laurels to the district and the community.
He observed that while education was once considered the only path to success, today’s world offers numerous opportunities through sports, skills, and talent. He encouraged the young athletes to continue developing their abilities, strive for excellence, and consider sports as a potential profession and career.
Muru also acknowledged the dedication of the coaches, officials, participants, schools, and parents whose collective efforts contributed to the team’s success and wished the athletes continued achievements in future competitions.
Sümi Hoho President Dr Vihuto Asumi also congratulated the team for their remarkable achievement and praised them for making the district and the Sümi community proud.
