` 1 Crore worth liquor destroyed

Mokokchung, August 30 (DIPR):  The  Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (Act) 1989 is  under public scrutiny, as the Act had often failed to hold  ground and at the time when churches of Nagaland reaffirmed their commitment to protect the Act on the ground that liquor is one of the major reasons  responsible for creating social problems.  In  this  backdrop,  a record-breaking  4, 000  cases  of  liquor  seized by law-enforcing agencies in Mokokchung were destroyed at the Mokokchung Municipal Council dumping ground (Ungma area)  on  August  28.

The  seized  liquor was  destroyed  in the presence of SP  of  Mokokchung, Bendang Lemtor, District and Sessions Judge of Mokokchung Maongkaba Imchen, Additional PP and Chairman of  Destruction Committee  T. Marlemba, SDO (C) of  Mokokchung  Nungsangmenla  and   civil  society and  church leaders. Additional PP  Marlemba  said the value of the seized liquor  was  worked out at ` 1 Crore (local market rate). He  said the  seizure  was  made  during  the   past  seven  months.

During a brief function at the destruction site, Pastor, Mokokchung Town Baptist Church Reverend Ponen Longchar and Ao Senden President, Lendi Ao thanked the Law enforcing agencies for implementing the Act with a firm hand. The two leaders termed liquor as the main source of all evils and assured full cooperation in the implementation of the Act. The quantity of liquors was so huge that around 30 (Thirty) labors (Motia) were engaged to destroy the seizure.
