A passenger bus bearing registration number NL-02-B-1032 ‘Ebenezer Travels’ plying between Mokokchung town and Tzüdikong town, under Tuli sub-division of Mokokchung district, slipped off the road, after the driver apparently lost control of the wheel while negotiating a hair-pin curve along NH 61 and plunged 142 feet down the gorge of Angetyongpang river, about 15 kms away from Mokokchung town, leaving 12 death on the spot while two succumbed to injuries, one on the way to hospital and the other after being brought to Mokokchung. The incident occurred today at around 12:20 PM. One of the dead was yet to be identified till the filing of this news.
The bus apparently skidded about 40 feet before going down the gorge. The total number of people injured climbed a high 36, several reported to be critically injured. The ill fated bus was traveling towards Tsudikong from Mokokchung Town. The driver of the bus, Putunungkum of Chuchuyimlang village, was found missing or absconding as per police reports, while his assistant or ‘handle-man’ Alimeren was critically injured. The injured were all rushed to Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital, Mokokchung. The Assam Rifles, Police, Red Cross, Medical Personnel and Volunteers rushed to the scene as rescue teams.
