Sazolie College organized the 16th Inter College Debate Competition on the topic “Artificial Intelligence is a threat to human society” at Vinizono Hall, Phezhu, Jotsoma on October 20. 

Addressing the event as the guest of honour and critic, Prof Glenn T Thong, Pro-vice chancellor, Nagaland University Kohima Campus, Meriema maintained that AI has become an integral part of our lives. He viewed that regulating the use of IA is very critical today, adding that some regulation should be put in place. Stating that AI has come in a big way, Prof Thong stressed on the need to make the best use of it.

Sazolie College Principal Dr Gopal Chetri said that college had organized Inter-College Debate Competition on 15 different topics in the past, ranging from liquor prohibition, social networking, Nagas self-reliant, Christianity, education system in Nagaland, clean election, Hornbill festival etc.

Referring to this year debate topic, Dr Chetri said that in spite of pros and cons of technology, “for the better part it has greatly helped to make our lives better.”

“It has not only able to save our important resource - as time and money but also has worked well in unifying the world by turning into global village which helped people to easily overcome their cultural, racial and continental barriers,” he said.

Stating that technology should be oriented towards positive social change, he said, “Hence, technology should be developed to design to promote our values, to respect each other, and to encourage innovation as we develop a place for ourselves in the 21st century.”

Kajol Kumari from Alder College wins debate 
Kajol Kumari from Alder College Kohima bagged the first position and received a cash prize of Rs 15,000.

Tiasen from Sazolie College and Tiarenla from Fazl Ali College Mokokchung stood second and third position and awarded with Rs 10,000 and Rs 7000 respectively.

Five consolation prize winners- Zhoveto Lohe from Oriental College Kohima, Huvelii Lohe from Kohima Science College Jotsoma, Ricky Das from Modern College Kohima, Sepithrong Sangtam from Tetso College Dimapur and Keneisetsonuo  Chatsu from St Joseph’s College Jakhama, received Rs 1000 each.

Altogether 20 debaters joined the competition.

The judges for the competition included Namang Chang, CEO Modern Myriad Branding & Consultant, IDAN, Govt of Nagaland; Ransom Lungleng, Development Professional & talk show host; and Atoba Longkumer, Engineer & Technology Entrepreneur, Founder & Director Tabernacle Technological Private Limited.

The competition was moderated by Jonna Mozhui, Asst. Professor, Department of Economics while Nzanmongi Kikon, Asst. Professor, Department of Political Science chaired the programme. Vote of thanks was proposed by debate committee convenor Robin Temsu.
