188 candidates in fray for Feb 23 poll in Nagaland

Altogether 188 candidates, including two women candidates, remained in the fray for Nagaland Assembly elections on February 23 after the last day of withdrawal of nomination papers today. Addressing a press conference at his office chamber this evening, Chief Electoral Officer Alam told newsmen that on the last day of withdrawal today only one Independent candidate, Richard, from Sanis Assembly Constituency under Wokha district has withdrawn his Nomination Papers. All the stand-by candidates have also withdrawn their Nominations after the Scrutiny. 

Out of 188 candidates for Nagaland Assembly elections the Naga Peoples Front (NPF) has 60 candidates; Congress has 57, Independents-39, NCP-15, BJP 11, JD (U) 3, RJD -2 and one UNDP. 

The highest numbers of candidates in constituency-wise are the Sanis and Bhandari Assembly Constituency under Wokha district. There are a total of 20 Constituencies, where there will be ‘straight fight’ with two candidates each. 

The largest Assembly Constituency is Tenning under Peren district, largest number of voters is in Ghaspani-I with 58,269 voters and the smallest voters’ Assembly Constituency is Mokokchung Town with 5788 voters.

Alam also informed that the Election Department has identified 662 Polling Stations as ‘hyper sensitive’, 821 Polling Stations as ‘sensitive’ and 542 as ‘normal’ out of a total 2023 Polling Stations in the state. Total number of EVM to be used in the election is 2600 numbers.  A total number of 1193438 electorates, with 603933 males and 589505 females, will exercise their franchise on February 23 in Nagaland.
