27 RD blocks without banks in Nagaland

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today informed that there are 27 RB blocks in the state of Nagaland without banks.

Replying this to MLA Yitachu in starred question at the 9th session of 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) here, Rio informed that the state government is in the process of negotiating with the various banking institutions to establish the banking facility at the RD block level which are functioning without banks.

He stated that opening of bank branches in the RD Block is monitored and reviewed through the State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC) chaired by chief secretary with important departments of the state government and all banks operating in the state represented in the committee.

For the purpose of opening bank branches in the unbanked RD blocks, these been allotted to banks by the SLBC, he stated.

Opening of bank branches by the allottee banks, however, depends entirely on assessment and decision of the respective banks, he stated.

Through the SLBC meetings, the state  government has been reviewing the matter and  emphasizing on the need  to open the branches by allottee banks expeditiously.

Rio also informed that Business Correspondents have been engaged by banks in rural areas for providing banking facilities like opening of bank account, withdrawal of cash through micro ATMN and making deposit.

Yitachu said that Ghathashi block is also yet to be covered, for which the number of RD blocks without banks in Nagaland stands 28.
