The 2nd Edition of the Inter Khelo India Centre (KIC) Archery Tournament was organized by Department of Youth Resources & Sports Nagaland, in collaboration with St Xavier’s College, Jalukie on July 9 at Jalukie in Peren district.
The tournament was joined by athletes from the two Khelo India Centres at Noklak and Jalukie, along with the Khelo India State Centre of Excellence (KISCE), Kohima. The inaugural programme was chaired by Youth Resources & Sports director Kethosituo Sekhose. Invocation was offered by Rev Fr Marius Patton, Administrator, St Xavier’s College, Jalukie.
Delivering the welcome address, the Director said the tournament has been organized to provide young archers aged 18 years and below with a platform to compete, improve their skills, and prepare for higher levels of competition.
Highlighting the State Government’s commitment to sports development, Sekhose referred to the Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio’s announcement of the Chief Minister’s Initiative for Advancement of Sports, covering Archery, Badminton, Sepak Takraw, Table Tennis, and Taekwondo.
He encouragedthe athletes to make the best use of the opportunities available under the initiative, including advanced coaching outside the State, free boarding and lodging, pocket money, and other support, expressing confidence that Nagaland has the potential to produce more athletes capable of competing at the highest level, including the Olympics.
Speaking as the special guest, Peren Deputy Commissioner Hiazu Meru, said that sports play a vital role in shaping responsible citizens by instilling values such as respect, fairness, integrity, honesty, perseverance, and a positive attitude.
He urged upon the young athletes to uphold these values both on and off the field.
He also emphasized the importance of a comprehensive sports policy and recruitment through the sports quota to provide deserving athletes with greater career opportunities and a secure future.
